SeniorNet @ Family Service League, the Don Weidman Computer Learning Center in Huntington, celebrates the Grand Re-Opening of the New Computer Lab

On Friday, April 4, 2008, SeniorNet @ Family Service League celebrated the grand reopening of its New Computer Lab at the Don Weidman Computer Learning Center, 790 Park Avenue in Huntington.

The newly refurbished lab was made possible through a very generous grant from The Huntington Town Board.  The grant was secured by Huntington Councilwoman Susan Berland and enthusiastically approved by Supervisor Frank Petrone, Councilwoman Brenda Jackson, Councilmen Stuart Besen and Mark Cuthbertson.  SeniorNet @ Family Service League is very fortunate to have such local support.  The dedication ceremony was celebrated by an extremely enthusiastic group of supporters who were responsible for the grants, the planning, the design, the configuration and the construction of all aspects of the new facility.  SeniorNet Huntington is justified to be proud of the equipment it provides for the continuing education of the senior population in Huntington and its surroundings.

 Fred Atkin, SeniorNet; Rick Van Dyke, FSL President and CEO; Steve Stern, 16th District Legislator                                                                                                                           As part of the grand reopening, elected officials, representatives of those officials unable to attend and business leaders, showed strong support for the project.Huntington Councilwoman Susan Berland assisted with the official ribbon cutting ceremony of the New Computer Lab.  On hand for the celebration were 18th District Legislator and Majority Leader of the Suffolk Co. Legislature Jon Cooper and 16th Legislator Steve Stern, Chairman of Veterans and Senior Affairs.  Also in attendance representing Senator John Flanagan was Carole Donaghy, representing 9th District Assemblyman Andrew Raia was Barbara Hannah, and representing Congressman Steve Israel was Craig Sakowski.

Representatives of KeySpanBob Keller, Executive Director of the KeySpan Foundation, and Jean Tesoriero, KeySpan Foundation’s Grant Analyst and Director of the KeySpan/SeniorNet Donation-Refurbishing Project were on hand as well to acknowledge the importance of this project to the community.

 SeniorNet volunteers and The KeySpan Foundation, through its computer donation project, have provided over 4500 refurbished computers to not-for-profit organizations who assist the underserved population.

Opening AttendeesFamily Service League, SeniorNet’s site sponsor, and the FSL Board of Directors were well represented by Chris Bene, Vivian Cahn, and Slava Vero. Rick Van Dyke, FSL’s President and CEO, Susan Edwards VP for Development and many other key staff members were on hand to join in the festivities.

 Sandy Krasner, SeniorNet NE Regional Coordinator represented SeniorNet headquarters and as always expressed her continued support for our center.  Over sixty (60) SeniorNet volunteers and friends also shared in the celebration of the New Computer Lab Grand Reopening.

All guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast, in a beautifully decorated room; kudos goes to SeniorNet’s special events coordinators and all other organizers of this special event.
